The Impact of AI in Universities; Cons for Students
Cons: Reduced Human Interaction
|Over-reliance on AI may decrease face-to-face interaction between students and educators, potentially affecting the development of interpersonal skills. Students might miss out on the mentorship and emotional support that human teachers provide.
Some students feel more comfortable using in this case AI tools to learn on their own, and their personality helps, but for some personalities are complicated for them to learn and feel comfortable being isolated. In The School of Your Pass for a Better You we offer a class to learn about your personality strengths.
Allow me to share another personal experience, working as a teacher at a prestigious private high school. I was assigned to a special mission, a kind of mission impossible. I was the third professor for that group of impossible kids in four months, you know the problem class group of the entire school. Believe it or not, from the owner these were my instructions; do whatever it takes to keep those students (he didn’t say students) in the classroom without destroying anything the whole day and you will be rewarded. And if you can teach them something that will be an extra point.
Wow! The first day! I was literally attacked by those kids, at the moment that I was turning my back to them to write something on the blackboard, an imminent war had taken place. Imagine 40 kids of around 15 years old, running, jumping from one chair to another, yelling, throwing anything they could at each other or me!
Didn’t matter what you said or did, absolutely anything made them respond as they were supposed to do! Ok, there is always hope, of those 40 kids, one girl! Only one sitting on the first line, nicely behaving trying to pay attention. One! I was angry! Suddenly she said to me; don’t worry miss I am paying attention, you can continue with your class, they are always like this, every day is the same, and that won't change, please don’t quit, I want to learn and finish my grade.
What would you do in this case? How can AI help?
I tried to teach her but that was mission impossible, I couldn’t raise my voice that much, just imagine the scene. That day I went back home frustrated. I was teaching at the university at that time, how could I call myself a professor if I couldn’t teach these kids?
What can I do to teach them or at least to keep control in the classroom? Is not about the job, this is a real challenge, as they were a problem, they did not have the level they needed to go next grade. Here, my core values are making struggles again, I won't be able to just try to keep them under control for the rest of the semester. I must help them to learn something! But how?
The next day was the same but this time I showed up my dominant character and they were surprised, I set up the rules, and that worked much better. Authority is all that they needed, you are probably thinking, wrong!
On the third day, another girl showed up, totally the opposite of the first I mentioned. This girl was the leader, yes, she was the one controlling the entire group. I am still wondering until today how she was able to control the entire group, everything, absolutely everything she said was done without questioning. She jumped over the chair giving me her back and giving orders to the group; when she said jump the entire group jumped, when she said sit, the entire group sat. It took me one day to take control of these kids and now this girl is ruining everything again. This is enough! I said to myself, I walked directly to her. I wanted to kill her (figuratively) just squish her neck. While I was walking in her direction, I was getting more and more angry, trying to find a strategy to apply immediately as the whole group was watching the scene, I had to think fast, if I couldn’t get an outstanding outcome in that moment, I would lose the entire authority I recently earned.
When I was in front of her, I looked directly into her eyes, and I asked her; is there something I can do for you? If you need to talk, I am open to listening and we can do that at the end of the class.
You won't believe this! Her eyes became crystal full of tears that she didn’t allow to get out, she ordered the group to pay attention to the class and she gave up the command to me.
I was able to give my class, a normal class with normal students since then.
Wait, I will share what happened at the end of that class, when everybody left, she was in her place. Then I walked to her again. How can I help you? She burst into tears. She shared that her rich parents went into divorce and that they started their lives taking different paths and traveling with their respective new partners. They don’t care about me or my little brother. They literally abandoned them. Well, you don’t need to fly solo anymore, you count on me now. Since that day she has become my ally.
Unfortunately, was too late to cover the whole program to help all those kids but at least I helped those two girls. I don’t know why but I got the nickname “Hitler” and wherever I was in the school all the kids gave me that salute.
So, if you were worried about AI, there are many things AI won't be able to do. AI is a tool for humans to make life easier, it won't be a replacement.
Cons: Privacy Concerns
AI systems collect and analyze vast amounts of personal data, raising concerns about data security and privacy. The risk of misuse or unauthorized access to sensitive student information is significant.
Cons: Equity and Access
Not all students have equal access to the necessary technology, potentially exacerbating existing inequalities. AI tools can be costly, making it challenging for underfunded institutions to implement them effectively.
Cons: Overdependence on Technology
Students might become overly reliant on AI for problem-solving, hindering the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. There is a risk that students may engage less actively with the learning material if AI does too much of the work for them.
Critical thinking and problem-solving are related for you to become resourceful, will be AI an obstacle or a great tool to developing this ability?
